ChapterOneGeneralIntroduction1.1BackgroundoftheReportCrowdsourcingreferstoapracticethatcompaniesororganizationsappliestoassigntheirtaskstoagroupofunspecificpeopleinsteadofstaffmembers.ThosevolunteerworkersareusuallyunpaidandInternetistheirmainworkplace.“Crowdsourcingisdistinguishedfromoutsourcinginthattheworkcancomefromanundefinedpublic(insteadofbeingcommissionedfromaspecific,namedgroup)andinthatcrowdsourcingincludesamixofbottom-upandtop-downprocesses.”(Wikipedia).Theterm“Crowdsourcing”wasfirstpushedoutbyanAmericanjournalistJeffHowefromtheWiredmagazineinJune,2006.Whiletheterm"crowdsourcing"waspopularizedontheInternettodescribeInternet-basedactivities,thereareexamplesofprojectsthatinretrospectcanbedescribedascrowdsourcingandpeoplearenotstrangetoit.Asasubbranchofcrowdsourcing,crowdsourcingtranslationisdevelopedwiththeinternetandtheneedsoffastconsumabletranslation.Still,thetranslationqualitygeneratedfromthismodeandtheimpactputonthetraditionaltranslationindustryarequestioned,butthenotionthatcrowdsourcingwillbeatrendforthetranslationmarketinthefutureisunarguable.1.2SignificanceoftheReportThebenefitsofcrowdsourcingtranslationareeasytounderstand:itishighlyflexibleandfruitful;theworkforceisalwaysreadytowork,andyoucangetasmuchasyouwant.However,italsohaslimitations.First,theparticipantswithdifferentbackgroundmakeittrickytomanageprojectingoodorder.Second,qualityoftranslationworksgeneratedfromcrowdsourcingisoftencontroverted,formostofthetranslatorsareunqualifiedandresultinenormousimpracticable1 works.What’smore,ethicalconcernsarisewhenmostoftheparticipantsarevoluntarilytocontributeandnoremunerationisguaranteed.However,ifrightsofthoseself-selectedvolunteersorpart-timeworkerswereguaranteed,collaborationbetweenprofessionalandnon-professionaltranslatorswouldachieveagreaterresult,includinghighqualitytranslations,trainingforunprofessionaltranslators,andbetteraccesstoinformationforbothofthem.Inall,somewaysshouldbefoundforfurtherstudyingaboutcrowdsourcingtranslationtosettlethoseproblems.AndthispaperwhichstudiesandanalyzesthequalityoftranslationsfromWikipediaplatformwillmakeadentinthoseproblems.Moreover,thispaperwillbeintroducedtoChinesescholarsandindividualswhoareinterestedincrowdsourcingtranslation.Therefore,Chinesetranslationpractitionerswillbemorefamiliarwithcrowdsourcingtranslationanditslatestdevelopmentsoverseas.ThisprojectcanofferinsightsfortheChinesetranslationindustry.AndifadvancedorganizationpatterncanbeappliedproperlyinChina,thismodelwillproducehigh-qualityworksandchangehowthetranslationindustryproduces,revisesanddisseminatestranslation.Furthermore,thesourcetextcontainsmanytranslationdifficultieswhichneedbothpatienceandendeavorforthetranslatortofigureout.Totranslateitwillpolishthetranslationcompetenceandenrichthecomprehensiveknowledgeregardlessofthepossibilityofimperfectdelivery.Thereforethistranslationprojectreportisofsignificance.1.3StructureoftheReportThisreportconsistsoffourparts:PartOnegivesageneralintroductionofthetranslationproject,includingbackgroundandsignificanceoftheproject.PartTwostatesthebackgroundofthesourcetext,includinganintroductiontotheauthor,maincontentsandlinguisticfeaturesofthesourcetext.PartThreeinvolvestranslationtheory:Newmark’communicativetranslationandsemantictranslation.2 ChapterThreeTranslationTheory3.1CommunicativeTranslationandSemanticTranslation“Expressivefunction,informativefunctionandvocativefunction”arethethreelinguisticfunctionsputforwardbyBulerandJacobson.Basedonthethreefunctions,PeterNewmarkcameupwithcommunicativetranslationandsemantictranslationinhisworksApproachestoTranslationwhichwasfirstpublishedin1981.Semantictranslation“attemptstoreadersascloselyasthesemanticandsyntacticstructuresofthesecondlanguageallows,theexactcontextualmeaningoftheoriginal.”(Newmark,1981)Sosemantictranslationismoreobjectiveandthetranslationformisclosertotheoriginalform.Communicativetranslation“attemptstoreduceonitsreadersaneffectascloseaspossibletothatobtainedonthereadersoftheoriginal.”(Newmark,1981)Inotherwords,thefocusofcommunicativetranslationistotransferinformationaccordingtolanguage,cultureandpragmaticformsofthetargetlanguage,ratherthantrytofaithfullyreproducetheoriginaltext.Translatorscanexplaintheoriginaltextfreelytosomedegreeundertheguildofthistheorybyadjustingstyle,eliminatingambiguity,evencorrectingmistakesmadebytheoriginalauthor.Toachieveacertaincommunicativepurposewithintargetedreaders,thetranslatorissupposedtobreakthelimitationsoftheoriginaltext.Usuallycommunicativetranslationtheoryisadoptedtoguildthetranslationofnon-literatureworkssuchasnewsreports,textbooksandannouncements.Itisworthnotingthatcommunicativetranslationisnotanextremetranslationstrategy,nordiditfreeorinflexible,butacompromisedway.Translationsgeneratedfromcommunicativetranslationareusuallysmooth,clear,direct,andconformtothespecificregistercategory.Under-translationoftenoccurswithcommunicativetranslation,inotherwords,generalvocabularyaretendtoreplacedifficultdiscourseforthesakeofreader’sunderstanding.7 Althoughdifferencesbetweencommunicativeandsemantictranslationaregreatandeachonehasitspeculiarity,weshouldstilltakethemasawhole.Therefore,in1994Newmarkcameupwithanewtheorywhichcombinesbothcommunicativetranslationandsemantictranslation.Anditiscalledacorrelativeapproachtotranslationwhichwasdefinedas“themoreimportantlanguageoftheoriginalorsourcelanguagetext,themorecloselyitshouldbetranslated.”3.2TranslationTheoryAppliedintheReportAsamacroprinciple,translationstrategyshouldbecloselylinkedtoanyonewhoinvolvedinthetranslationproject,namelythesource-languagewriter,thetranslatorandtargetreaders.Asthetranslatormentionedabove,thesourcetextisatypicalinformativetextandreader-oriented,communicativetranslationshouldbeadoptedasthemaintheoryofthisproject.Communicativetranslationtakesreadersasthecenter,andemphasizeonthereadabilityandacceptabilityofthelanguage.Therefore,inpracticethetranslatorshiftfocustothemessageofthesourcetext.Thatistosay,theoriginalcontentisrepresentedintheprocessoftranslationandthefinalversion.Tomaintainthisobject,thetranslatorcanmakefulluseofthetargetedlanguagetoreachthesameeffectthattheoriginallanguagebringstothereadersandnotboundbytheoriginalform.JustlikeSchleiermachersaid:“Leavethereaderinpeaceasmuchaspossibleandbringthewritertohim”.AccordingtoNewmark,Domesticationshouldbeadoptedasthemainmethodofinformativetextforitsgoalistotransmitinformation.However,inpractice,wecannotseparatedomesticationfromforeignization.Translationprincipledemandsthetranslatortofaithfullyreproducethewriter’sviewandstylewhichareexotic,thereforeforeignizationmustbeapplied.But,ontheotherhand,readers’understandingandthefluencyofthesourcetextshouldalsobetakenintoconsideration,sousingdomesticationisinevitable.Itisunrealistictoselectoneof8 them,anddiscardtheother.Thetranslatortriestomakefulluseoftheiradvantagesbycombinethetwomethodsintheproject.9 ChapterFourDifficultiesinTranslationandSolutionstothoseDifficulties4.1DifficultiesinTranslationAcademicwritingisacomplexandprudentworkandtheauthorneedstoexplainanddescribeintricatephenomenonmeticulouslyfrommanyaspects.Thelongsentencescomposedofseveralclausesbetterelaboratetheauthor’sideaandavoidambiguity.Forthisreason,longsentencesareappliedwidelyinthisarticle.AndwithdifferentsentencelinguistichabitsbetweenEnglishandChinese,longsentencesaretroubleforalltranslatorsallthetime.Excessivemodifiers,parallelcompositionandlanguagehierarchyareusuallywheretroublelies.Anddivision,combination,inversionarefrequentlyusedtosolvethoseproblems.Thesourcetextalsocontainsalotofspecializedterms.Andmostofthemarenotfrequentlyusedinourdailylife.Theymaylookfamiliartous,butalwayshaveunderlyingmeanings.Therefore,thosetermsmaybeconfusionandmisleadthetranslator.But,throughcarefullyverifyingandstudying,thisdifficultymaybeproperlysolved.NowthatthepaperonlychoosearticlesdescribesasbeingoriginalwritteninFrenchorSpanish,andcasesinthosetwolanguagesarepresentedinthispaper.WhetherthoseFrenchandSpanishshouldbetranslatedintoChinesearedifficulttodecide.Circumstancesaltercasesandthisdifficultywillbesolvedinthisproject.4.2SolutionstoThoseDifficulties4.2.1TerminologyExample1:Wikipediaisawell-knownexampleofawebsitewithcontentdevelopedentirelythroughcrowdsourcing. Thisexampleappearsinthebeginningoftheabstractofthepaper,whichgivesageneralideaoftheWikipedia.Normally,“article”referstoapieceofwritingaboutaparticularsubjectinanewspaperormagazine,butinthisspecialcontextitmeansthebasicunitwhichonlyconcernsonetheme/people/thingoracombinationofaparticulartopic.Therefore,thetranslatortracedtheexactcorresponding“条目”.Andthiswayofexpressionismoreprofessionalandconformstotheprecisenessstandardoftheacademicpaper.Suchcasesarenumerousinthisproject.Usuallythoseterminologiesresemblethesameappearanceofordinaryword,sotheymaybemistranslatedintoageneralsensewithoutnoticingitsspecialmeaning.Hence,thetranslatorpaysmoreattentiontothosesimplewordsandcheckstheirmeaningcarefully,soastomakethetranslationmoreauthenticandaccurate.4.2.2NominalizationExample2:Articleswith15orfewereditshadthelowestpercentageofresolvedproblems,andingeneral,asthenumberofeditsincreased,sodidthepercentageoferrorsthatwereresolved. AsWikipediadefines:“Nominalizationisatypeofwordformationinwhichaverboranadjective(orotherpartofspeech)isusedas(ortransformedinto)anoun,orastheheadofanounphrase,withorwithoutmorphologicaltransformation.”Thissentencedescribessomefactsshowinginthetableand“thepercentageoferrorsthatwereresolved”willbementionedinthefollowingtextfordataanalysis.SothetranslatorconvertsitintoashortnounformwhichismorepracticeforcorpusstudyandmoreaccordwithChineseexpression.NominalizationisnotfrequentlyusedinChineseforthelanguageis11 parataxis-prominent.Inotherwords,therelationshipamongwordsandsentencesareinvisibleinChinese.However,academicpaperpaysmoreattentiontoconciseness.Onthepremiseofaccuratelytransferthemessage,thetranslatortrieshardtomakethelanguageaccordwiththeacademiclanguage.And,inthisspecialcontext,thetranslatorchoosestonominalizethesentenceintoashortphrase.Evenisnotaconventionalway,butconcreteanalysisshouldbeappliedinconcreteconditions.4.2.3DivisionExample3:Translationperformedonlinebyself-selectinginternetusers,whoareoftennotprofessionaltranslatorsbutwhoarecollaboratingtocompletelargeprojectsfor(virtually)nofinancialremuneration,hasincreasinglybeenatopicofinterestwithintranslationstudies,whetherthispracticehasbeenstudiedunderthenamecollaborativetranslation(DésiletsandvanderMeer2011),communitytranslation(Kelly,Ray,andDePalma2011),crowdsourcing(Cronin2010;McDonoughDolmaya2012;Mesipuu2012),fantranslation/subbing/dubbing(Dwyer2012;O"Hagan2008),user-generatedtranslation(O"Hagan2009;Perrino2009),volunteertranslation(O"BrienandSchäler2010;Olohan2014),wiki-translation(Cronin2010)orsomecombinationoftheseterms. Ingeneral,thecommonelementsoflongsentencesareplentyofappositives,attributivesandclauseswhichseparatethesubjectandthepredicate.Thegeneralproceduresaretosimplifythesentencebyfindingoutthebackboneofit,andthenstraightenouttherelationshipwithclausesormodifiers.ThisisthefirstsentenceoftheIntroductionpartandanexplanationofcrowdsourcing.Beingdescriptiveandeasytounderstand,ithastwoclausesqualifyingthe“self-selectinginternetusers”,while“translation”isthesubjectofthemainclause.Consideringthis,12 literaltranslationanddivisionisadopted.ThetranslatorsplititintotwosentencesinChinese,sothereadercanunderstandthemeaningeasily.AndthisapproachalsoconformstotheChineseexpression:torealizetheconnectionofthewordsorphraseswiththehelpoftheirinnermeaninginsteadoflanguageformsinEnglish.4.2.4ShiftingExample4:ThispaperusesMossop’staxonomyofeditingandrevisingprocedurestoexploreacorpusoftranslatedWikipediaarticlestodeterminehowoftentransferandlanguage/styleproblemsarepresentinthesetranslationsandassesshowtheseproblemsareaddressed. Theselectedsentenceisthepurposeandthefocusofthestudy.Syntactically,“determine”introducestwoadverbialclauseswhichwasconvertedintoanounandaphraserespectivelybythetranslator.Moreover,thetranslatoremployslexical-syntaxshiftasthetranslationtechnique.Shiftingreferstotheprocessofconvertingthelanguageunitsorstructureofthesourcetextintocorrespondinglanguageunitsorstructurewhichresemblesthesimilarorcorrespondingnatureandisinvolvedwithmanyaspectsoflinguistics,suchasrhetoric,semantics,pragmaticsandculture.4.2.5OmissionExample5:“Navahermosa”,SpanishWikipedia(23July2012)AntonioLlorente,alcomentarlafrecuenciadeestetérminoenlazonadeSalamanca,ÁvilaylaparteoccidentaldeSegovia,sitúasuorigenenenlaslenguasdevetonesycarpetanos,aunqueplantealadudadesuorigenvascoenelqueexistelavoznaba“llanura,valle,barranco”.13 Omissionmeansdonothingtothesourcetextinwhichsomecomponentsaredirectlyintroducedtothetargettext.Inthisexample,thetranslatorchosestoputthesourcelanguagedirectlyinSpanishfortworeasons:first,Spanishisbeyondthetranslator’knowledge;second,themainlyfocusofthisexampleistoshowthatarticlescontainedmanynearlyincomprehensiblepassageswaspossiblygeneratedbyautomatictranslationsoftware.Therefore,therewillnotbeanobstaclefortargetreaders.Therearealsomanyinterlinearnotesaftersomespecialtermssuchas“DésiletsandvanderMeer2011”,“Kelly,Ray,andDePalma2011”andsoon.Inthosenotes,onlytimesandauthorsarestated.Theyarespecialistinthisfilebutnotfamiliartopublic.Forthereasonthetargetreadersofthisprojectarehighlyeducatedorfamiliarwithprofessionalknowledge,thereisnoneedtotranslatethosenotesintoChinese.Duringthisprocess,zerotranslationisputtouseforeasytracetothesource.14 ChapterFiveConclusion5.1EnlightenmentfromtheprojectTherelationshipbetweentranslationtheoriesandpracticehasbeenunderfiercedebatesincethetranslationstudieshasbeenestablished.Andamongwhichwhethertranslationtheoriescanprovideguidancefortranslationpracticearemostcontroversy.Howeverthisprojectalreadyprovedthattranslationtheoriescannotonlyguidethepractice,butalsotestthetranslation,whichwillhelpthetranslatortounderstandthepracticebetterandimprovetranslationcapability.What’smore,wordslikecrowdsourcingappearsforthefirsttimeinfrontofthetranslator,yetherlifehasalreadybeenfilledwiththispattern,onlyshedoesnotrealize.Thus,thisprojectcallsforattentiontheworldaroundus.Tobeaprofessionaltranslator,thereisstillalongwaytogo,suchasbroadeningoftherangeandscopeofourgeneralknowledge,andTogetabetterunderstandingoftheimportanceingeneralknowledge,thetranslator’sknowledgeofthesubjectmattercannotbeoveremphasized,anditcanalmostbeacceptedasarulethat,giventherequiredlanguageproficiency,thegreaterthetranslator’sknowledgeofthesubjectmatter,thelessarduouslyunderstandingmaycause.5.2ProblemsremaintoberesolvedTherestillexistsomeproblems.Firstly,asalaymanofcrowdsourcingstudy,Iamnotfamiliarwithsomeconceptsandprincipleswithinthisstudy.Hence,sometermsornamesmaybeimproperlytranslated.Secondly,asanacademicreport,thewritingstyleofthisbookisrigorousandprecise.Duetotheinsufficienttranslationpracticesaboutthiskindoftext,sometranslationsinmyworkmightseemawkwardandcolloquial.Thirdly,thelanguageofthefinalversionisnotperfectandstillcontainsmanymistakesandimproperexpression. 60
