'SeminarReport‘PreventionofGender-basedViolenceamongAdolescentsinEurope:ResearchandEducationalPractices’Onthe27thofApril2009theMediterraneanInstituteofGenderStudies[MIGS]organisedapublicseminarentitled:‘PreventionofGender-basedViolenceamongAdolescentsinEurope:ResearchandEducationalPractices’.TheseminarwasorganizedwithintheframeworkoftheprojectPerspective:PeerEducationRootsforSchoolPupilstoEnhanceConsciousnessofTacklingandImpedingViolenceagainstWomeninEurope,DaphneIIIProgramme,EuropeanCommission.Theaimoftheseminarwastwofold:tobringtogetheracademicsandpractitionersworkingonissuesrelatingtogender-basedviolence(GBV)amongadolescentsinEuropeinordertoidentifycommonissuesthatarisefromresearchundertakeninvariousgeographicareasinEurope;andtopresentandevaluateinterventionsaimedatcombatingthisphenomenon.TheseminaralsoaimedatraisingpublicawarenessonthevariousformsofGBVaffectingyoungpeople,itsrootcauses,anditsconsequences.Theseminarwasattendedbyover45participantsincludingNGOrepresentatives,tradeunions,andteachers,representativesfromtheMinistryofEducationandtheMinistryofHealth,thePolice,aswellasotherprofessionalsinterestedinissuesrelatedtogenderviolence,bullying,andeducation.TheseminarfacilitatorswereMsSusanaPavlou,DirectorofMIGSforthefirstthematicpanelonGender-basedViolenceinCyprusandinEuropeandDrKikiPetroulaki,PresidentoftheBoard,EuropeanAnti-ViolenceNetwork,forthesecondthematicpanelonInterventionsforthePreventionofGBVamongYoungPeople.TheseminarbeganwithawelcomeaddressbyDrZeliaGrigoriou,AssistantProfessorattheUniversityofCyprusandBoardMemberofMIGS.AbriefintroductiontothePerspective projectfollowedpresentedbyMsMichelaIorio,CoordinatoroftheprojectfromtheCityofModenainItaly.Ms.IoriooutlinedthemainaimsoftheprojectandthelogicbehindintroducingpeereducationactivitiesasaninterventionactionaimingatthepreventionofGBVamongyoungpeople.ThefirstpanelbeganwithGeorginaChristou,ResearchAssociateandProjectCoordinatoratMIGSwhopresentedtheresultsoftheDaphneIIproject‘SecondaryEducationSchoolsandEducationinValues’,towhichMIGSwasapartner,withafocusonthequalitativeresearchconductedwithteenagersinCyprus.ShepointedoutthemostcommonformsofGBVinteenagerelationshipsinCyprusaswellassomeofthepossiblecausesbehindthesebehaviors.Sheemphasizedtheperceptionsthatteenagershaveinrelationtolove,violenceandrelationshipsandtheassociationofthesewithGBV.DrVappuSunnariaSeniorLectureronWomen’sandGenderStudies,fromtheUniversityofOulou,FinlandproceededwithapresentationoftheresultsofherresearchonphysicalandsexualharassmentasexperiencedbyNorthwestRussianandFinnishchildrenintheschoolenvironment.Theresultsshowthatinthemajorityofcasesofsexualharassmentinschools,theperpetratorsareboysandthevictimsaregirls.ShealsoexpressedconcernoverthealarminglyhighrateofgirlsexperiencingsexualharassmentinschoolsinFinlandandthelackofadequatetrainingforteacherstoaddressthisphenomenon.MrFriedrichGlenskifromLeipzig,GermanyfollowedwithanoverviewonGBVinGermanyandemphasizedthatgirlswhohadbeensexuallyvictimizedbeforetheageof16aremorethantwiceaslikelytobecomevictimsofviolencefrompartnersorex-partnersandfourtimesmorelikelytobecomevictimsofsexualviolenceaftertheageof16.FurthermorehepointedoutthatmigrantwomeninGermanydonotonlysufferGBVmorefrequentlybutalsosuffermoresevereandextremeformsofphysicalviolence.DrJesusJerranzBellidofromAlicanteSpainproceededwithanoverviewofanumberofprojectsthatdealtspecificallywithGBVamongyoungpeopleintheSpanishcontext.ThesecondthematicpaneloftheseminarbeganwithapresentationbyMsTamaraGeorgiadou,ProgrammeOfficerattheCyprusFamilyPlanningAssociationontheimportanceofsexeducationinthepreventionofGBV.MsGeorgiadouemphasizedthedifferentcontextsthroughwhichyoungpeoplereceivetheirsocializationintermsofgender rolesandattitudesandhoweffectivesexeducationprogrammestargetingchildrenformanearlyagearevitallyimportantforthedevelopmentofahealthysociety.Shealsopointedoutthatsexeducationprogrammesmusttargetnotonlystudentsbutalsoteachersandparentsinordertostoptheperpetuationofnegativegenderstereotypesinoursocieties.FollowingthisMsMairyChioni,DirectorofHealthEducationofthe1stAthensDirectorateofSecondaryEducationpresentedtheresultsfromavarietyofresearchstudiesconductedinGreeceonthephenomenonofbullyinginprimaryandsecondaryschools.Shealsopresentedpeereducationmethodologyasaninterventiontooltopreventbullyingamongmiddleschoolchildren.ThelasttwopresentationsmadereferredtothedescriptionofcampaignsmadeinItalyandBelgiumwiththeaimtopreventGBV.MsAlexandraAdriaenssenesfromtheDirectorateofEqualOpportunitiesoftheMinistryofFrench-speakingCommunityinBelgiumpresentedthreecampaignsthatweredirectedtowardspreventingviolenceinyoungcouples.Mr.SandroCasanovaoftheorganizationMascilePluraleofBolognaproceededwithapresentationoftheWhiteRibbonCampaignmadeinItalyonanationwidescaleandwhichmainlytargetedmenandboys.Themaingoalofthecampaignwastogivevisibilityandspacetomenwhowanttoengagewithfightingviolencetowardswomen.TheWhiteRibbonisasymbolwornbymenthatrepresentsapersonalengagementtonevercommit,toleratenorremainsilentwhenfacedwithviolenceagainstwomen.Theseminarwasconcludedwithadiscussionbetweenparticipants,presentersandorganizersontheconceptofGBVandwhatcanbeconsideredassuch.Thediscussionfocusedonthegenderdimensionofbullyingaswellastheconsistentharassmentofhomosexualstudentswithintheschoolenvironment.FormoreinformationonthePerspectiveprojectpleasevisithttp://www.medinstgenderstudies.org/?p=1552orcontactGeorginaChristouatgeorgina@medinstgenderstudies.org.
