ChapterThreeTranslationDifficultiesandSolutionsThischapterisabouttranslationdifficulties,theoreticalguidanceandtranslationmethods.3.1TranslationDifficultiesThedifficultiesthatImetduringtranslationwerenotonlycausedbydifferentculturalbackgroundsandlanguagehabitsofEnglishandChinese,butalsobydifferentlogicalthinkingoftheauthorandme.Basically,therearetwodifficultiesthatIencounteredintranslation,tofigureoutthelogicandtodeterminethemeaning.Thetwoproblemsareillustratedbythehandlingofthefollowingparagraph.InBeijing,thepolicewerestoppingforeignersmoreandmorefrequentlyonthestreet,eveninexpat-friendlyneighborhoods,andaskingtoseetheirpassportsandvisas.Everyoutsiderwasapotentialsecuritythreat.Visarenewalshadreplacedairqualityastheinescapabletopicofconversation.Theyearbefore,declaringyouwantedtogetoutofthecountryfortheOlympicswasanaffectation,awayforoldChinahandstoexpresstheirdismayatthethoughtofaoncechallengingcitybeingoverrunbysofthordesoffirst-timetourists. ThefirstdifficultyishowtounderstandthewritinglogicofScocca.Inthebeginning,theauthorwritesabouttheChinesepolice,whocheckforeigners’passportsandvisastogetridofthreats,thentheoutsider,visarenewals,thethingthatdeclareyouwanttogetoutofthecountryfortheOlympics.ThesubjectschangesorapidlyandIcouldnotfindtheinnerrelationsbetweenthefirstpartandtherest.Ialsocouldnotfigureoutwhomtheword“you”refersto.IbelievethisiscausedbydifferentwaysofthinkingbetweenScoccaandme.Inordertobefaithfultosourcetext,Itriedmybesttocatchupwiththeauthor’slogic.6
Thesecondproblemishowtodeterminatetherightmeaningofsomewords.Intheaboveparagraph,therewas“affectation”thatItookasahurdle.“Affectation”isthenounformof“affect”whichhasfivemeaningsinOxfordDictionary.Therefore,Ihadtomaketherightchoicefromthem.Thefivemeaningsare“toproduceachangeinsb/sth”,“toattacksborapartofthebody”,“tomakesbhavestrongfeelingsofsadness,pity,ect.”,“topretendtobefeelingorthinkingsth”and“touseorwearsththatisintendedtoimpressotherpeople”(shang,2006,p.28).Accordingtothecontext,thelastoneistherightmeaning,itwasnoteasytochoosefrom“炫耀”and“做作”.Atfirst,Ithoughtusing“炫耀”wasmoreaccuratethan“做作”.However,whenIcheckedthewaystosay“炫耀”inEnglish,Icouldn’tfindtheword“affectation”andwhenIchecked“affectation”ontheInternet,Icouldn’tfindthemeaning“炫耀”.Therefore,Itranslated“affectation”as“做作”.3.2TheoreticalGuidanceThisprojectisguidedbytheprincipleofDynamicEquivalence,putforwardbyEugeneNidain1960s.ThisconceptisbasedonwhatNidacallstherelationshipbetweenreceptorandmessageshouldbesubstantiallythesameasthatwhichexistedbetweentheoriginalreceptorsandthemessage.Nidadistinguishestwotypesofequivalence,formalanddynamic.Formalequivalence“focusesattentiononthemessageitself,inbothcontentandform”(Nida,2004,p.159)withaimstoletreadersunderstandasmuchofthesourcetextaspossible.Incontrast,dynamicequivalenceemphasizesmoreontheeffectthereceiverreceivesthemessagewiththepurposeto“relatethereceptortomodesofbehaviorrelevantwithinthecontextofhisownculture”(Nida,2004,p.159).NaturalnessisakeyrequirementforNida’sdynamicequivalence,whosegoalistoseektheclosestnatureequivalenttothesource-languagemessage.Thesuccessofthetranslationdependsaboveallonachievingequivalentresponse.Itisoneofthe“fourbasicrequirementsofatranslation”,whichare:(1)makingsense;(2)conveyingthespiritandmanneroftheoriginal;(3)havinganaturalandeasyformofexpression;(4)producingasimilarresponse.(Jeremy,2008,p.42)Later,Nidarealizedthatachievingabsolute7
symmetrybetweenlanguagesisimpossiblesohepreferredtheterm“functionalequivalence”inthesensethat“equivalencecanbeunderstoodintermsofproximity.”(Nida,2004,p.87).Equivalenceisacentralproblemintranslationpractice.Astherearedifferencesbetweendifferentlanguages,especiallythosefromdifferentlanguagefamilies,intheaspectsoflanguageculture,structure,andwaystoconveyideas,itisimpossibletorealizeabsoluteequivalence.Despitethis,seekingformaximumequivalencewasstilltakenasthefirstpriorityinmytranslation.Toachievethisgoal,duringmytranslation,Iemployedanarrayoftranslationmethods,amongothers,wordsselection,additionanddivisionandcombination,etc.,asareexplainedindetailinthefollowingsection.3.3TranslationMethodsInthispart,theauthorwritesaboutwordsselection,additionanddivisionandcombination.3.3.1WordsSelectionBothEnglishandChineselanguagesfeaturewithpolysemy,andonlysomepropernounsandtermsinscienceandtechnologycanbeabsoluteequivalentinbothlanguages.Therefore,itisquiteimportantforagoodtranslationworktochooserightwords.Wordsselection,namelydiction,thechoiceofwordsandphrasestoexpressmeaning,mustbebasedontheaccuratecomprehensionoftheoriginal.Themeaningofawordisitsuseinthelanguagebutnotonlyitsdefinitioninthedictionary. 8
InExample1,thewords“activists”and“yieldto”werehardnutsforme.Itranslated“activists”as“积极分子”atfirst,but“积极分子”cannotmatchthemeaningof“actor”(演员),soIsearchedthemeaningof“activists”withOuluDictionary,whichgavemetwomeanings“积极分子”and“激进主义分子”.BothofthetwowerenotwhatIwanted.However,Ifoundsentenceexamplesinthedictionary,whereIgotthesuitablewords“活动人士”.Asfor“yieldto”,Itranslateditinto“让位”atfirst,butaftercarefulreading,Ifounditnotsuitablehere.ThenIsearched“让位”ontheInternetandfounditmeans“让出官位或职位、推让坐位、模具术语”.Therefore,Ireplaced“让位”with“让步”.Example2:ST:Theoldoverheadsigns,announcingthe“FamilyPlanning”and“LittleEdible”departmentsinEnglish,weregone.TT:头顶上,用英语写着“计划生育部”和“小吃部”的陈旧标识消失了。Iwasextremelyconfusedaboutthemeaningof“LittleEdible”atfirst.Whatis“LittleEdible”?IstherethiskindofdepartmentinChina?Whichdepartmentcanbesettogetherwith“familyplanningdepartment”inmarket?Thosequestionshauntedmeforalongtime.AndIcouldnotfinditsmeaningthroughsearchengines.Theoriginalmeaningof“Edible”are“可食用的”and“食品”,buttheyarenotsuitablehere.Ialsoaskhelpfrommyclassmates,butIgotnoanswer.Isolvedtheproblemonasunnymorning.WhenIcametoastoretobuyapen,“小吃部”,aChinesenameofastorecameintomyeyes.Thatwastheanswer.3.3.2AdditionThemethodofadditionintranslationmeanstoaddnecessarywords,phrases,clausesorcompletesentences,thepurposeofwhichistomakethetranslationconsistentwiththetargetlanguageintermsofgrammarandlanguageform.Inthisway,thetranslationwillbeequivalenttothesourcetextintermsofcontent,styleandspirit(Feng,2008,p.58).Duringtranslation,thetranslatormayalsoaddthe9
informationthatisnotwrittenbutimpliedintheoriginaltext. Myfirsttranslationversionis“在这个《权利法案》诞生地,人们在安检时必须要脱下鞋子和皮带,行李还要被安检人员开箱检查,如果人们在领取行李时打电话,安保人员会上前阻止”.Theinformationthatconveyedinsourcetextwasconveyed,butitfailedtoincludeitsimplicationbecausesomereadersmayevennotknowwhattheBillofRightsis.Therefore,Iaddedinmytranslation“人权大于主权”tomaketheimplicationexplicitand“却”tomakethelogicclear.Example4:ST:Hewentontoaboomingfinish:“JustastheChinesepeoplehavedemonstratedintheearthquake.Theyhaveshowntheirstrongcharacter. ThesentenceinsourcetextisJinDapeng’swords,whichomits“strongcharacter”,buttheimplicationisthere.SoIadded“坚毅的品格”intranslationtokeepthemeaningintact.3.3.3DivisionandCombinationDivisionisthemethodthatusedtodivideasentenceintotwoormorepartsbypickingoutthosewords,phrasesorclauseswhicharehardnutstocrackand10
makingthemintoChineseword-groups,clausesorsentences,coordinateorsubordinate.Combinationmeanscombiningwords,phrasesandevenclauses,i.e.reproducingtwoormorethantwowords,phrasesorclauseswithfewerwords,phrasesorclauses.Asakindofparataxislanguage,ChinesesentencestructureislooserthanEnglish,andthesentencewouldbeendedafterfinishingthewholesense-group,butitsinternallogicrelationisalwaysrealizedthroughcontextandwordorderwithoutalotofassociatedwords.Incontrast,Englishprefersatree-likesentencestructure.Takingthisdifferenceintoconsideration,IrestructuredthesentencesinsourcetextintranslationtomakeitconsistentwithChinesestructureandsyntax. Duetothedifferencesdiscussedabove,itisnotappropriatetotranslateExample6inaliteralway.Therefore,Idividedthesentencebetween“1988”and“when”.Also,IadjustedsentenceordertoconformtothehabitofChineseexpression.Example6:1.ST:Babyfoodwasfluidlike.Babyfoodwasthereforebanned.TT:婴儿食品是流质食物,所以婴儿食品禁止带上飞机。2.ST:ShespokeEnglishandworeyogapants,awhiteT-shirt,andflip-flops.Herhairwasreddishandpulledback.11
Thetwoexampleshaveonethingincommon:thereisoneoverarchingsubjectwithtwoorevenmoredescriptions.Inthefirstexample,thesubjectisbabyfood,whileinthesecondone,“she”as“herhair”canbetakenasadescription.Inthiscase,Icombinedthedescriptionsinonesentencetomakethetranslationconciseandsmoothanditsperspectiveconsistent.12

(Therewillbethunderstorms”or:“athunderstorm”)。 (Therewillbeheavyshowers.)。 (Teawasservedinpapercups.)。 (Theteaistoostrong.)。 (Iamsleepy.)。 (Iwilltakeanap.) (Itakeanapafterluncheveryafternoon.)。 Welearnedmanysentences,butwecan’trememberthem.)。
赵守镇有些口头禅,她说:“TIC(ThisIsChina),这就是中国。
